The Latest From The City of Wilsonville Community Services Department

Thanks to Brian Stevenson, Recreation Coordinator at the City of Wilsonville, for sharing the following with us! (Brian's in charge of our Community Garden.)

1.  Public Works has recently created an area that can be used for plant clippings and compost.  The area is defined by 3 concrete barriers and is located outside of the fence on the east side of the garden (the same area as last year).  Although it was created by the City's Public Works Dept. we ask that the gardeners take responsibility for what is placed into this area, as well as turning the compost.  It is recommended that food scraps be limited as this can/will attract rats.

2.  Unfortunately, there is no garbage service at the community garden.   As a result, the can that was left over from an early season weeding was removed.

3.  The idea of a recycling program at the garden has been brought up but much like the lack of garbage service, the city cannot be responsible for managing a recycling program.  If there are gardeners who would like to discuss a potential recycling program I would be more than happy to chat with interested parties and determine the following

--Who will provide the containers
--What would go into the containers
--Who will manage the containers
--Who will empty the containers (and at what frequency)

4.  As part of your garden plot we ask that you look after half of the path that separates your plot from others and all of the path that separates your plot from the fence. Please do your best to keep these areas free of weeds.  Your fellow gardeners will thank you!  Any additional weeding you would like to do would also be appreciated – areas that could benefit from this are: around the raised beds and on the outside of the fence.
